Post Update

Previous post:

I took this cat to another vet to get some opinions on what to do. In the last post I left out some information because I really wanted to focus on behavior changes and I wanted to make sure any opinions professional opinions I received came from someone with a background I could verify.

TL;DR for those who don’t want to read the post:

He was abused before I adopted him.

He bit someone he normally loves when she pissed him off.

He has FIV.

He’s shitting everywhere if he doesn’t feel like using the litter box.

I can’t give him medication or do anything he doesn’t like without him getting pissed and I know how he can be when he’s aggressive so I don’t. (He has not needed medication since he was a kitten. He’s now 13 pounds of muscle and death. Quite literally.)

Besides that he’s just a sweet and normal cat.

Overall TLDR: I’m trying to find any professional or rescue that takes problem cats with FIV. I’m emailing them myself but I will miss some and this is sort of time sensitive. Got any links?

Here goes:

I mentioned this cat bit my friend in self defense. Due to that bite she contracted cellulitis and a bone infection. Both pretty severe. She is immunocompromised but the fact his bite caused such a severe reaction is apparently unusual. Which is in line with what the doctors told her when she went in.

I have a second cat that he tries to get along with but did not before. He’d smack her and steal her food a very long time ago. He was kept separated and over time he’s gotten better to the point he tries to be her friend. She of course hates him and will not let him near her but they keep their distance and are only in the room together when I’m there and both are in a good mood so I can keep them apart.

Anyway, here are my options according to the second vet.

  1. Euthanize - highly recommended

  2. Rehome to a rescue - not so recommended

Edit: Reasons for number two:

Because this cat’s bites are so dangerous it wouldn’t be good to rehome him with a random person.

A rescue doesn’t take any liability for foster families so if he bites someone they’re on their own.

Because his bites are so dangerous on top of FIV he can’t be with other cats.

Once the damage is done, it’s done.

On top of that there are some cats who just never get used to being indoors. If he’s one of them and his overall temperament changes it could be too late before I notice.

I do not want to euthanize him. I’ve had him for five years. He’s five and a half. He might be a pain in the ass but I love him.
