Is it a good idea to get a cat in university?

I have moved to university a couple of months ago and have been living on my own and without pets for the first time in my life. The opportunity to adopt a cat that needs a home has appeared and I feel tempted to take it in. My parents don't think it's a good idea because of how far away university is (requires a plane ride to go back and forth, so also additional costs to take the cat with me on holidays, although it is an effort I'm willing to make). Money isn't a problem in this situation and I am well aware of the costs as I have had cats my whole life so far. It has been a big change for me and has gotten more lonely with time, so that would be another reason for me to get the cat. One more concern is space, the house i am in has enough space, but barely any direct sunlight. I am very torn about it and don't know what choice i should make, it would help to have some opinions.
