I was wondering about this the other day and wanted to hear some of your ideas about it.
Sterilizing your pets is usually a great idea to prevent unwanted pregnancies. I believe that it is very positive and I am not against it. But the removal of ovaries or testicles has a lot of consequences on a body. That is why in humans unless extremely necessary it wont be done. Instead hysterectomies, tubal ligation, salpingectomies and vasectomies are usually done.
I know that it has advantages like reducing the chances of certain cancers but it also has disadvantages, like unproper growth or incontinence. Our older GSD is incontinent because of that. It is also a bigger surgery and has more risks.
I am surprised that the option to sterilise our pets without the removal of the gonads is not really offered. A salpingectomy or vasectomy barely has risks, they still reduce some risks of cancer and is much easier to recover from. It could be a good way to control the breeding without changing the natural hormones of the animal.
But so far I have not found people who does it and it surprises me a lot to be honest. I asked two vets and one simply said "it is not done' (they dont learn how to do it?) And the other talked about avoiding behaviours caused by the hormones (which does not really explain it). I can understand that heat can be anoying in the city but if you live in rural areas I dont see why would it be a problem.
Any ideas and comments about this topic? :)
