Title pretty much says it all, but here is the backstory:
I have this friend who runs an exotic animal educational encounter/petting zoo type business. They're fantastic, great with the animals, will always put them first and will remove from a show the minute an animal shows any sign of stress, etc. They aren't the problem here.
They made a deal with a very well known vendor in the exotic animal industry (I won't mention a name, but they are well known at reptile shows) to purchase and pick up an exotic animal.
When they got there, they saw how horrible the conditions the poor animal was in. Lived in a tiny cramped cage, severely underweight, malnourished, improper diet, open wounds etc.
The animal's "vet" hasn't even seen this species in a year when they checked.
The vendor that was selling the animal doesn't know how it was actually obtained prior to them getting it, they suspect illegally imported. Regardless- the condition it was in while at the vendor was horrible, and the vendor had it for a year.
They (the good educational encounter person) still purchased the animal because all they wanted to do was save the poor thing. The animal is now in great hands and is undergoing rehabilitation, on the road to recovery.
Bottom line is, we would like to see action taken on the vendor. What are the steps we would need to take? Should they get a lawyer involved? Is there someone they can send to do a through surprise investigation?
Is there a chance that the purchased animal will be taken away? (the state they're in is legal for this species ownership, they've done all the research on that prior). Is there a chance that anything will happen to the good educational encounter people?
It may also be worth noting that the animal in question is not endangered, and is on the Least Concern list- but still very exotic.
