Idk if this is the right place to talk, but I want to be honest in my personal journey with Pitbulls and how I’m at the point I am. I will have questions about them as I’m looking at one that’s been at a rescue for a long long time.
Please don’t be insulated with me. Just wanting to learn and I’m keeping an open mind.
So I will say I don’t know much about pitbulls but I know they get stigmatized ALOT! I know that some are very aggressive because of their unfortunate background, and some are super sweet like the one I’m looking at.
I’ll be honest Pit bills are not on the top of my list of a dog to have, but I know if the right one came along I’d want him or her.
I grew up in a family that believed they are most of the time aggressive dogs, so bare with me as I try not to stigmatize just pitbulls.
I keep hearing their jaws are one of the most powerful though and they can lock their jaw if they “snap”. I always hear of a lot of attacks which makes me hesitate of adopting one, unless it was a puppy.
So right now... I can’t have a dog because my man and I will be going through some major moving out of state/ life changes. Within the next 6 months.
We did have a dog for a bit (7yr old Weim), but after 6 months of adopting her we had to put her down- the previous owner gave us a sick dog without telling us.
I’ve been wanting another dog really bad, but due to this major life change that’s coming up we both know it’s not fair to get a dog now.
So my college friend works for an animal hospital/rescue and she recently posted about a pit bull that has been at the rescue for 2 yrs. I think I’m falling for her in the photos and videos. But at the same time maybe I miss having a dog so much that maybe I just want another dog.
She doesn’t like other dogs, but my friend describes her as a super sweet people dog. She’s 8yrs old going on 9. She’s been at the rescue for 2 yrs already.
I figure if she’s been there for that long she will probably be there 6 months from now. I’m hoping she will be adopted, but I still think maybe she will still be there. It is a no kill rescue, so I don’t have to worry about them putting her down. A lot can happen in 6 months for my man and I and for this sweetie.
Anyways I want to know more about pit bulls and what is characteristic of the breed? Do they really have the most power per inch in their jaws? Do some of them just snap one day? I heard they can be characterized as a nanny dog.
I do recognize that every dog is different even pit bulls. I don’t think all are bad but I just want to know more about them. Grooming, health problems they are prone to. Do they have a lock jaw.
I’m sorry if some of the things seems like I don’t know much besides negative things, since watching pitty nation videos I have become interested in pit bulls and I know deep down they aren’t all bad. Some look scary but aren’t.
Would a rescue pit bull be a good first/2nd dog for my boyfriend and I? I’ve had labs all of my life so it’s not that I’m not experienced with dogs, but she would be my 2nd dog of having on my own.
