Hey all. I'm a first time poster here, and am in desperate need of advice.
My husband and I adopted a cat about a month and a half ago. She was a stray before being brought to the shelter. She's a year old, and up until a week ago was the sweetest, gentlest little cat. She's always been a bit nervous, especially with loud noises, but generally very sweet toward us and toward visitors, even letting my friends pick her up and snuggle her. She was even nice at her first vet visit. And then, something happened.
I had a lady over (who kitty has met before and was fine with) and she decided, for no reason, to demonstrate the sound her cats make when in heat. My cat absolutely lost it. Attacked the lady without warning, came at my leg, and howled at the top of her lungs. She looked so scared, like she was fighting for her life. This episode only lasted about a minute, and kitty was back to normal. Rubbed her head up on me, went and licked the lady she attacked. Then the next day, my aunt and grandmother (who kitty has also met) came to visit, and she hissed at them any time they came near her.
She was completely fine after that, and I figured she had gotten over whatever was going on. And then yesterday, she attacked my husband and me, scratching and hissing and growling, seemingly set off by the upstairs neighbor's son shouting. Again, it didn't last long, but was quite vicious. My husband went to work a couple hours later, so I had my mum over for dinner. A little background info - this cat ADORES my mum. The very first time kitty met her, she curled up and fell asleep on her lap, and she's done so every other time she's visited. But last night she attacked mum every chance she got, hissing and swatting, again without warning. She wouldn't even let her walk past without hissing. It was so bad we had to leave the apartment.
Again, this morning, she went for my husband (we think she was upset by the sound of the coffee maker), hissing and scratching.
The past week has been really hard on me, as I absolutely adore this cat and thought I'd found my perfect feline match. What the heck happened? Has anyone else experienced this type of thing? Any tips for how to keep myself and kitty happy and safe? I really want to try everything I can to make this work for us.
Tl;dr: sweet, affectionate kitty I adopted last month was traumatized by a very loud visitor, and now is attacking everyone who visits and sometimes us.
