My girlfriend wanted a cat, I didn't especially want a cat, so we compromised and got a cat.
Anyway, we went to the local humane society shelter and she immediately fell in love with a teeny tiny one year old cat. The volunteer at the shelter pulled her paperwork and said that the cat was rescued from a cat hoarding situation, where that individual had something like 40 cats. Crazy. The little rescue cat already had a litter of kittens and has an ongoing ear mite issue that is being treated with ear drops twice a day and will need to be treated twice a day for another couple of weeks.
My girlfriend didn't care about any of that (she works in healthcare, so was totally fine with the idea of needing to give kitty some ear drops twice a day) so we adopt the cat. We made a room up for her (a guest bedroom) that can be all hers for the transition per the advice of the shelter. It has everything a cat would need. Litter box, toys, scratching posts, a little kitty teepee sort of thing (she had something similar at the shelter) fresh food (the same as she had at the shelter) and water.
The cat just refuses to come out from under the bed. She is eating now, finally. We brought her home Sunday, and this morning I noticed a very small amount of the food is gone, same for the water. She is also using the litter box, no accidents or anything of the sort there. However, whenever we try to interact with kitty, she gets this low, deep, slow growl. She seems to like the petting, she'll push into your hand and sort of give you the glance if you stop, but she is absolutely growing--not purring like the shelter thought it might be.
I have a dog, but the dog hasn't been allowed in the room since kitty arrived home, She'll lay outside the room sniffing, but doesn't bark or anything I'd consider stressful to the cat--The cat hasn't even made eye contact with the dog as we place the dog in the other room when we enter the 'cat room' so the dog doesn't kool-aid man her way into the room as a way to introduce herself to her new friend,
Kitty won't come out from under the bed, which means I need to essentially crawl under there and slide her out when its time for the ear drops. We burrito her up in a blanket and give the drops. We pet her at this time and she's slowly growling the entire time, sometimes even giving out a few audible hisses-- but still pushing herself into the pets. As soon as the drops are done, she's fine with another minute or two of petting, then takes off for back under the bed.
I'm not a cat expert by any means, but what could possibly be going on? Any ideas?
Thanks!
