Hey Reddit, Recently I have been contemplating getting a pet bird, but I have a few questions about the logistics and ethics of owning one. First, are birds as pets really happy? I have heard conflicting opinions about this in the past. Before I get any pet I want to make sure that it will actually have a happy life with me as it’s owner. Something about the idea of a bird being confined to a house, unable to fly etc seems wrong to me, but I have been told that birds really can be happy in a pet environment. Also, do birds count as exotic pets? I know that the exotic pet trade is really bad for the environment and for the species on sale. So would a parakeet in a pet store really be “domesticated” or far away enough from the wild population that it wouldn’t have an effect, or does this still constitute and “exotic” pet that is detrimental to the environment? Finally, I also just want to know about the general work involved: how much care/attention do birds (like a parakeet) really need, how expensive are they, can they carry diseases (salmonella etc), could they coexist with a dog, and other basic care details.
I’m on mobile so sorry for any errors :)
Thanks!
