My grandmothers cat, Bob, who is about 12 or 13 now has had these strange reddish black spots in his mucous membranes (eyes, mouth, nose?) for a few years now. They seem to move, and can produce kind of blackish discharge in his eyes, and nose. They can also be picked off, leading me to believe that it is not lentigo (at least not around his eyes and nose). As far as I am aware there are no other symptoms, he doesn't use a litter box inside the house so we don't really know much about his feces or urine. Occasionally they will flare up, too, leading to more of the spots and discharge. Any idea as to what it could be and how we should respond?
Should also probably note that they live on a fairly isolated island with a relatively large stray cat population and he spends his nights and most of his time outdoors.
