Caging up our cat

We just adopted a cat and we're running into behavioral issues. Scratching things that don't need to be scratched, eating shoes, eating plants, using plant pots as litterboxes, and generally being an unholy terror whenever we have our back to him.

We've tried scratching posts, we've removed the plants, we've tried playing with him for hours so he spends his energy, we've tried sprays.... This is more than what my husband thought we were signing up for. To be honest I'm getting close to my limit too.

So, we've got two options: give the cat to the humane society

or

Caging the cat when we're gone or asleep. Here's the cage we were looking at: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-3-Tier-Cat-Cage-Playpen/dp/B07CMY5Y1P/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=cat+cage&qid=1554695752&s=gateway&sr=8-4#immersive-view_1554695774141

My concern is giving the cat its best life. He's a young, friendly, and pretty kitty and I have no doubt he would be adopted quickly, but it's a bit of a dice roll there.
