Getting a new cat and how it affects my other cat

So, I'm in need of advice here.

A few weeks ago my cat, my best friend for 12 years, got ill and needed to be put to sleep. We have another cat who lived with her for six years and had company since she started living with us. So now we're worried if it affects her to suddenly be alone.

So we thought about getting company for her and already picked out a cat we really like and we think would really fit with her. That cat is about two years old, so younger than her.

Would that be bad for her? Is there a risk it stresses her out more than suddenly being alone? Could it actually help or should we not do it?
