If you think this doesn't belong to this sub, please suggest me a more appropriate one.
Sorry if it is quite long, but I needed to be clear.
I'm thinking about taking a new pet.
I had to put down my dog almost 9 months ago and despite not being completely over it and starting university short time after (so basically being busy from 6:30am to 6:30pm 4 or 5 days a week and with the study) I miss something I can spend my time with and taking care of, especially because I stay alone in my room half of the day during exams or at weekends (I still live with my parents).
I don't like cats so much (sorry for cat lovers) and I don't want another dog for two reasons:
-
I would feel guilty because my previous dog was quite crazy so I was never allowed to keep it inside the house
-
Dogs want to play (not my previous one, she just ran randomly everywhere she could) and need to stay outdoor quite often, so they can get dirty easily and after a hard day or week I'll find quite hard I want to spend an hour throwing a ball or running behind it and having to clean it after
So this is why I thought about a rabbit. I've never got one but I knew two people that had them and I loved them and I've already made some researches about how it should be maintained (I know rabbits require a specialized vet) and how much does it cost annually.
I won't take it just to leave it in a cage (only at night), I would leave it around the house and keep it with me while I'm at home (especially while I study), but I'd like to know from someone that already owns (or owned) it if it is ok leaving it alone for all that time during the day. I have lessons basically 6 months a year, while I'm at home the other 6, plus every weekend and sometimes another extra day a week. When I'm away one of my parents always comes back at home for lunch and can provide it food if necessary (or I can leave an amount of fruit and vegetables near the cage in the morning if it doesn't eat it all in 20 minutes).
I will wait until this summer to decide whether to take it, because I want to see if I still have this desire.
I'd like to know if my life routine would be a deal for the rabbit, because I don't want to be careless and if you have any suggestion or problems it may cause (like if it may chew cables or eventually smell bad) please let me know how to deal with them, as I can be completely sure if I'm making the right decision.
Thanks a lot for the attention.
