She's a female cat, she's 2 years old, close to 3. My almost 8 year old tomcat suddenly passed away a week ago due to problems with his heart. I don't really know what is best for my girl in this situation:
Now, my tomcat was really dominant even though he was neutered and very demanding and claiming of my attention, and I feel like she's definitely less anxious, she's more cuddley and never sits under the couch anymore. But she's acting kind of strange around some of 'his' previous 'territory' in the house and I'm not sure why or what the best course of action is. She has very obviously been completely avoiding his previous favorite spots. She never did this before, when she had the chance she would sit in those spots too, but now doesn't at all. I also noticed she was not really eating as much as usual, and I thought it might be a good idea to change the food bowl to a new one and place it somewhere else in the house other than their usual spot, and it immediately worked, she's eating her usual amount again. This is why I'm kind of confused. Is she avoiding 'his' spots because she misses him and she's grieving or does she still somehow think she's not 'allowed' there? And I was wondering if, after the food bowl thing, it would be good for her to wash everything and thoroughly vacuum to get his smell out of everything, or if it's best to leave it as is and let his smell fade out over time? Thanks.
