Litter Robot smells?

A few months ago I bought a WiFi-enabled Litter Robot 3. At the time I was living in a house, the Litter Robot was in the basement, and things were well. I've since moved into a smaller apartment, and the Litter Robot now lives in a closet with the door cracked a bit to let my cat in. I never used to notice the smell, but now that it's right off the living area, the smell of ammonia is pervasive. And when my cat goes number 2, it will continue to smell until I empty the drawer. I've washed the machine inside and out, I tried various types of litter, replaced all the seals and filters. My cat eats a quality diet and when I briefly switched back to a traditional litter box, there were no issues. I think because in a regular litter box, the poop is buried in litter, but with the Litter Robot, it's essentially exposed in the drawer. I've even installed a makeshift vent system (essentially, an aquarium air pump in the drawer of the machine and a tube out the window). It's certainly cut down on the ammonia smell (and I highly recommend it!), but I still empty the drawer once or twice a day for his poops. Customer support has been great with other problems, but on the smell issue there doesn't seem to be any definitive fix.

Does anyone else have a problem with their Litter Robot smelling? Most people report it being smell free, so I'm not sure if maybe I'm doing something wrong, or if my guy is just a smelly pooper and the Litter Robot's not right for him.
