My two roommates (BF and GF) own a young Shihtzu together, about 2yrs old. I feel like their love and affection for her is only during times when its convenient for them, in other words like a toy.
We'll start with her (the dogs) personality. It doesnt exist. This thing is either sitting on the floor or laying in her doggie bed. She's startled easily by loud noises, sudden movements, and absolutely hates new faces. She loves to be pet but will flinch if you extend your hand towards her. For the most part you will find her always on high alert and placed in her bed
With minimal training she stares blankly at most commands, and disobeys when you call her. (She gets out the front sometimes and we lure her in with her food) She runs from them when they need to pick her up, stares blankly when called up the stairs when they go to bed etc. However, she is rewarded with treats regardless.
Onto her routine, this is where I'm mainly concerned. Because we all work full time, shes left in the morning to curl up and whimper by the front door until someone comes home. I have woken up to it before and learned it had been over an hour since they left the house. We have to open the door slowly so we dont hit her with it, and in her excitement she will pee and poop instantly, everytime :( She wont even drink from her water dish when shes alone so she chugs it like a derp when I walk in the door - after shes done doing her business all over the entrance mat of course.
I could provide more examples but more than identifying the scale of the problem, I'm having a hard time approaching them that there even is a problem. Both become defensive when I suggest different methods of training or ways to socialize her and I don't believe they are making attempts to correct her behaviour or improve her quality of life.
