I am looking for advice about my situation.
I just graduated from university and have a job lined up. I'm subletting an apartment for about eight months from an acquaintance of mine. After finding out that the lease permitted pets, I happily adopted a lovely cat from my local humane shelter. Did the paperwork, picked her up and she's quickly become my best friend. That brings me to my problem: this week my acquaintance informed me that she will not tolerate pets in her apartment, despite the fact she herself has a cat.
The lease is signed, advance rent has been paid. Can she do anything legally speaking? Subletting essentially means surrendering the lease to another tenant. After signing the lease, there would need to be reasonable cause for eviction, but I have broken no clause within the lease. Her tone indicated that I return my cat to the shelter or find another place to go. The landlord refuses to get involved. I'm to move in soon and have no way to get out of this situation.
Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.
