(UK) Friend's dog has killed a neighbouring farm's livestock, farmer now wants the dog put to sleep

I’ll keep this basic:

A good friend has a Labrador/Doberman cross. He’s 3 years old, large, and really sweet. Unfortunately he has a very active predator instinct. Up until now this hasn’t been an issue, he even lives with a 7 year old cat and has never so much as touched him.

That changed a couple of days ago. A ewe and her lambs must have squeezed through a gap in the fence not far up the road from his house. We assume they couldn’t get back into the field and made their way down the road to the next open gate, which belongs to my friend's family. This field is used almost like a large front garden for them, meaning the dog has access to it. I think everyone can see where this is going..

It ends with one lamb killed by the dog, one quite badly injured and the ewe going into shock and dying as well. My friends parents only found out when their dog came back to the house with blood around his mouth. They have informed the neighbour, who has now threatened legal action and wants the dog put down for being dangerous.

Is there any leeway on this? I get that farmers have a right to shoot dogs that are hassling their livestock, but these animals broke out of his field and wandered on to someone else’s land. I also hope the dog doesn’t attract negative prejudice for being half Doberman.

Any advice would be appreciated guys. I don’t want to see this poor dog be put to sleep in the prime of his life because their neighbour doesn’t know how to properly fence off a field..

Thanks in advance!
