Is my dog dangerous

My family recently got a 3 year old 130 pound dog about a week ago. At first he was really quiet and really shy but he's gotten friendlier as he's gotten used to his new home. We have been keeping him in a cage at night because we don't want him to get in any trouble while unsupervised. My family had gone to bed but I was staying up a couple of more hours doing homework. The dog was yelping and whining a lot so I figured I'd let him chill in my room for a couple of more hours before having to go back in his cage. I got him back in his cage when I was going to bed (with a hot dog bribe). For 15 minutes he howled and howled and I knew I wasn't gonna be able to go to bed any time soon. I figured I'd let him sleep in my room. He wouldn't come in to my room but was standing at the stairs which we had blocked off that lead up to my moms room who he's most attached to so far since she's mainly training him. I was just doing the typical sounds to get the dog to come to me that I did with the last dog when he started to growl. He's done that before in a mostly nonthreatening way so I wasn't really trifled by it but then I just said his name, perfectly calmly, and he was growling a bit more. I went into my room calling his name to try and get him to come but he wouldn't. Eventually he went on to the couch which is right next to the stairs. I came out of my room a few minutes later and thought maybe a bit more stern approach (stupid in hindsight, he weighs as much as me) would help. He growled much worse this time and I was getting legitimately afraid. I'm getting used to this dog, don't know if he's capable of really lashing out, and haven't had a pet nearly this big before so I sternly demand him to stop mainly out of fear honestly and he lashed towards me barking. I've been barked at by plenty of dogs and have NEVER been afraid before but I legitimately jumped and ran back to my room, my heart was pounding. My mom came down and got the dog a few minutes later when I called her from my room and she didn't seem to take my fear seriously, thinking it was probably just more playful than I was imagining. I don't know the dogs past 3 years experience to know if it has any trauma that might make it aggressive but he seemed totally cool before this point.
