Aggressive cat attacking me

Long story, need advice on cat behavior.

I recently went to stay with my friend for two days. She has a cat I’ve known for around ten years, and there were never any problems until about 4 years ago when it randomly scratched my face while I was sleeping.

Four years later, I’m at her house alone while she’s at work. I walk in and the cat is happy to see me, smells me, purring. The cat blocks my way and tries to jump at me multiple times, even scratching my leg. It’s hissing and meowing. I stay calm, and my friend says to feed it to calm it down, so I do and everything’s good for a few hours.

My friend, a bartender, comes home late and lives in a studio apartment. I go to sleep on her bed, and the cat runs over and tries to jump on me and scratch me. To defend myself, I throw a blanket over it, and it runs under the bed then later comes out and sits somewhere. I stay awake until my friend is home, and it does nothing for the rest of the night; we even sleep in the same bed.

Next day, my boyfriend comes to visit us. Cat’s happy and gets to know him and treats me well. My friend goes to work and everything’s okay for a bit, then it’s sitting with my boyfriend and he’s petting it, then it starts swatting at him. He gets up and calmly sits across the room. It follows him and smells him, then leaves and is making direct eye contact with him. Still very nice to me. Boyfriend later goes to bed, cat gets alert, follows him over, then leaves.

I stay up for a good two more hours. Everything’s okay. The cat is making direct eye contact with me, and I have a bad feeling. I give it some time then decide to go to bed. It doesn’t immediately follow me to bed, so I turn the light out and make sure I sleep with a blanket over my face. Ten minutes later, attacks me again, scratching me through the blanket on my hands and neck. I’m hysterical and my boyfriend leads it to the bathroom.

My friend comes home like 15 minutes later. I’m crying and she’s nice but says “he only does this to you” and is making arrangements for him to stay with a friend while I’m at her studio for another day.

I don’t think this is normal behavior. I had cats since I was a child, interacted with many cats, never had an issue. It’s not in a defensive position but very much an offensive one. Is it possible the cat has behavioral issues or really just wants to just attack me?
