Can crating be temporarily or it needs to be permanent?

We have a new 14wk old Cairn puppy. She's inquisitive to a fault so we've dto try crating. I have an 11yo Cairn mix who was never crated.

My question is, can crating be temporary? We're crating because we have a 2yo daughter who doesn't know how to clean up yet, so we worry about the puppy eating random stuff off the floor like plastic or etc. We also worry about housebreaking first.

I don't like the idea of a crate, I think it's sad to put the puppy in effectively a jail periodically, but I've never used one before this. My fiancee says a crate is permanent but I want to use it just until the dog can differentiate between inedible stuff on the floor and food and is housebroken, at which point I don't wish to use it anymore.

Our senior dog just roams the house free and I dig this atmosphere for our house.
