Hi everyone,
I'll warn you that this post is going to be depressing. I'm conflicted about what to do here, so please provide your feedback.
Some background: My mom caught a stray, long-haired cat about 10-11 years ago and kept her as a pet. For a while, she was comfortable around our other 2 cats, but never around people. One day, she ran into the basement and never came back upstairs, My mom provided her with toys, food, water, litter, etc... in the basement, despite it not being the best environment for a cat. We haven't been able to socialize with her because she refuses to be around people.
Over the years, my parents' ability to take care of her has diminished. I went away for college, and they're both aging. They're having difficulty getting up and down the stairs to take care of her. This has meant the cat's quality of life has decreased even further. For example, since she's a long-haired cat, she has matted fur all over.
I moved back in temporarily about a year ago and have done what I can to help, but it hasn't been enough. I'll be moving out in a couple of months and fear she'll be left to deteriorate in the basement.
I shared this cat's story with a local shelter and they told me she would likely die from stress if we were to bring her in, and that there is no hope of adopting her out due to her lack of human socialization.
We are considering catching her and having her put down. I don't see another option beyond letting her continue to live this way until she dies naturally. No one feels good about this option, so I wanted to reach out to see if anyone has had a similar situation or can provide alternatives.
Thank you in advance.
