Fluff Adventures: Cat and Dog

Now I love my cat, but sometimes he can be something else. He has his standard cat behavior, meowing, rolling around everywhere, conversing with whatever spirits are probably in my apartment, scratching anything he deems a scratch post..this isn't limited to just the carpet by the way. His name is Leo. My dog is a small black, white, and brown shih tzu who's the sweetest little thing in the whole wide world, has never hurt even a fly, and revels in all the attention she's given. She barks, still tries to play and run despite her old age, and sometimes she'll cry if she thinks she didn't get enough cuddles..melts your heart. Her name is Jetta, previously named Baobei.

He and my dog, Jetta, have a rather strong bond. My mom had adopted him as the only surviving kitten and presented him on Christmas of 2016. The first thing he did was knead my cheek before proceeding to make himself comfortable directly on top of my face. This would be the first of many occasions he's slept on my head or face. Then he met my dog. She's an 11-12 year old shih tzu, she was 9 years old at the time. I'd gotten her in 2008, ironically 8 years before we adopted Leo. Surprisingly, he wasn't the least bit afraid of her and immediately decided that she was his new best friend, and always followed her around everywhere. Whenever we walked her, he always complained until we came back with her, then his mood would revert back to positive. He ultimately claimed my mom as his mom, sometimes he'd meow at her to carry him and he'd sound like he was trying to say "mom!"

As he grew up and Jetta grew older into the precious grandma baby puff she is today, they grew closer and did everything together. Ironically, he'd always try to fight with the vacuum cleaner whenever we used it because he probably it as a monster coming to steal his family. He'd even try to square up with it when it was unplugged. Every night it was, and continues to be, a ritual to check to make sure the vacuum wouldn't come to life in the middle of the night, stare at the door for a couple hours, then either curl up next to Jetta, my mom's spare pillow in her bed, or directly on top of my head. It was never anywhere else on me. It was always my head or face. I guess he picked his favorite spots around my mom or me, for he always slept on her stomach or the extra pillow on her bed. If he decides that he doesn't want to sleep on my head or face, he'd pick some of the most inconvenient spots on my bed..most of the time, it's near my back whenever I'm sleeping on my side, or directly beside my feet whenever I'm in any other sleeping position.

He was very protective of our family, and gets jealous of other people getting more attention than him. Jetta loves and revels in the attention she gets, sometimes she gets excited when I come home and give her all the pets she wants, but sometimes she gets too excited and pees a little..no biggie, it doesn't happen very often. Leo, however, gets mad if he thinks anyone is stealing our attention from him, up to a point where he'll bite us or meow like it's the end of the world to make the "opponent" go away.

He's currently still protective, even more so now that I'm living alone due to our mom being deployed and Jetta, his best friend in the whole world, is now a senior dog who will continue to age. He still follows her and seems to back off once she gets to where she's trying to go, or yells at me to help guide her more, although I guide her everywhere still..I don't know how he'll fare when she eventually passes away, but I know I can't replace her with another dog. He wouldn't like the replacement. Right now, we can only appreciate the time we have left with our furry grandma companion.

He still cuddles with her and gets mad when other people steal her attention from him, and puts himself between her and whatever he thinks is a threat, including me by mistake one time when I tried to carry her up the stairs, which is a thing I have to do because of her weakening and arthritis-ridden joints. I ended up carrying both of them to reduce the chances of him yelling at me more. I love my furry companions, and I wouldn't trade them for the world.
