Hello.
I have two Jack Russells and we adore them. However, in his old age and following a mini-stroke, one of my dogs won’t stop barking when we get his lead out for a walk.
I’m not talking a little excited bark. It’s genuinely ‘WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF’. It’s like a normal bark but a machine gun version. Nothing anyone does can stop him.
I’m at my wits end because my partner is diabetic and sleep is really important for him, his current job also involves a lot of driving and he’s currently being woken up extremely early at walkies time by the incessant barking. I’ve also had law exams recently and have also been suffering, both of us are exhausted and can never get back to sleep.
We’ve tried ear plugs, white noise machines, I’ve bought him a soft muzzle but my parents refuse to use it as they think it’s cruel. I obviously don’t think the muzzle is ideal, but it is a soft one and he’d only need to wear it until he’s off on his walk- at which point the barking stops. I’m also conscious of the fact we have neighbours so are likely being infuriated by this, because mommy parents seem to make no efforts to control him. We’ve also tried an anti-bark collar which vibrates to try and deter him from the barking sprees to no avail. We’ve even tried changing the command for him to stop barking, before we would just generally tell him ‘no’ but realised that’s probably confusing for him, so we now specifically say ‘stop’ when he barks. This also hasn’t worked.
I’m hoping and praying someone out there has an answer. It’s honestly driving us all nuts. We love our little doggy so much and it will never change that, but I WISH he’d stop bloody barking!
Thanks!
