I just moved in with a friend and her mother, they have two cats and a dog. The cats are fine, but I'm becoming increasingly concerned about the dog. It's always scratching itself and biting it's body to relieve itching, and patches of hair have been worn away. It does have fleas and is being treated with a collar and repellant, but I thought they could only be seen with a microscope and I can clearly see small black bugs moving in it's hair. I think it's anal glands are also impacted since it smells pretty bad, like rotten fish. I've been here a week and it's never left the house, and even I know dogs need to go for a walk, so god only knows the last time it did. The poor thing is constantly whining quietly and is obviously suffering, but I don't want to offend the mother by taking it to the vet and implying she isn't looking after it, nor do I want to alert the authorities since criminal charges could result and I'd cause trouble for the family and have to move out, something I can't afford. What do I do?
