Some context:
I rescued a 9 month old black cat almost two months ago. He’s wonderful and I absolutely love adding him to the family. My family loves him too.
When we first introduced him to our home we created a small room for him to get him used to our home. It has his litter box, toys, scratcher, food, and water. Originally, we planned to only use it as a way to ease him into a new environment and to contain any destructive behavior until we figure out healthy ways for him to scratch, chew, etc.
It’s been about 2 months since we got him, and my family still insists on keeping him confined to the room when nobody is home or when nobody is awake. I feel torn about doing this, mainly because sometimes he wants to be with me and not cooped up in the room, but also since he’s an explorer it seems like he doesn’t really like to be in there sometimes, other times he doesn’t seem to mind.
Lately he’s been exhibiting more rambunctious behavior (going to very high places, getting spooked and zooming around the house) more frequently and has excessively groomed himself to the point of broken skin and skin infections.
I’ve been told by numerous cat owners that we should let him free roam all the time, and that with a more free lifestyle he’d stop doing that. But my family insists that keeping him in his room during times where we can not monitor him is for his own safety (they worry he’ll eat cleaning supplies, burn himself on the stove, extreme and unlikely cases like that).
My question is, is it okay for us to continue using this room. If not, how can I convince my family otherwise this isn’t ok?
