Looking for an actual healthy cat food

I've been trying to research what food I should be feeding my cats for ages but I have so much trouble separating the facts from fiction. It seems like every food has something wrong with it. I'll go to one site that recommends it highly and then immediately see another site insisting that it's terrible and should be avoided at all costs.

I'm currently giving them Naked Essentials because I had heard good things about it, but recently I've seen a few things claiming the opposite and I'm questioning my decision. My vet recommended Hill's Science Diet but I read that they've had a ton of recalls and it has caused a lot of pets to get sick apparently. Like I said, I don't know how to filter out the bad information and just find a food that is undoubtedly good for them.

I've had cats for my entire life and the brands I remember trying are Naked Essentials, Blue Buffalo, Royal Canin and Instinct. There have been several others (this was over the course of years, I switch foods very infrequently and when I do, I make sure that it's done gradually). Essentially every time I find a brand that I think is high quality, I eventually start hearing bad things about it and go off on a wild goose chase for an alternative.

So, does anyone have any reliable information as to what is the actual best food to feed cats? I know all of the general guidelines of making sure meat is the first ingredient, avoiding certain grains, etc. I'm really looking for specific brand recommendations and why you chose them.

Help is much appreciated!

PS -- I have two cats, both young but adults (2 and almost 5). Neither of them seem to have a notable sensitivity to anything in particular and both of them are healthy weights.
