Hello, I need some advice on how to go about this.
My sweet malti-poo is 12 years old: she has cushings disease (being treated with meds), diabetes (2 insulin shots a day) and could potentially have gastritis. She also has cataracts and is almost blind. The vet has told us that she is in pain due to her left eye and she could be experiencing pain in her stomach.
In the last year her overall health has deteriorated. She is very restless and does not sleep nearly as much as she used to. She also gets very confused very often. We can see she is in pain as well. A couple weeks ago she had her first seizure, she fell to the ground and couldn’t move and pooped herself. The vet said it is a possibility that she could have a mass in her brain.
Due to her age and condition our family and the vet does not want to do any invasive procedures to investigate her problems further at this point.
We are managing her condition with her prescribed medication and prescribed pain pills in a small doses throughout the day.
However, she eats well, pees and poops on her own and will wag her tail here and there. She enjoys her walks and belly rubs and I can still feel her love.
I don’t know how to bring it up to our vet that I’m considering her being put down. I feel like a terrible person thinking about it but I honestly don’t feel she’s living the best quality of life and is truly happy anymore. Our family does anything we can to make her comfortable and happy and thankfully we have the means to afford her medication.
My dog is my best friend and family member, i love her so much and can’t imagine my life without her. But I don’t want to see her in pain and discomfort anymore.
How do I approach the topic with my vet? Am I being unethical? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
