Need advice on preventing cat allergens

Hi r/Pets. I have been searching and searching for info on this subject and decided to bring it here for advice from people who have maybe had to deal with this before. So the situation is: I want to get an animal, and would prefer to get a cat. I have some mental health issues and a lot of trouble making friends but I love animals, so I am wanting to adopt a rescue and hopefully improve both of our lives. We live in an apartment so I am hoping to adopt an older, more laid back cat or a very small dog that will be able to move around comfortably. The issue is my fiance's best friend (who comes over quite a bit and who is basically my brother-in-law and is always loved and welcome in our home) has a pretty strong allergy to cats and dogs. He has expressed before that it isn't a concern and he'll deal with it but his girlfriend says he's just playing it down.

I started looking into allergen friendly cats and found a bit of info there but I don't know how much I can trust it since I was seeing different things in different places. I have also seen info that air purifiers can help, I just don't know to what degree.

If anyone has information they can give on the subject, I would really appreciate it. If it comes down to I can't get an animal then I'll deal.

Also, for clarification, due to the apartment's restrictions my only real options are a dog or a cat. I looked into ferrets, birds, and even fish, but rodents and birds are completely banned and aquariums over a certain size are banned as well so I wouldn't be able to give a fish a big enough space to really live.
