Hello, This week (Monday) my bf and I came home from the shelter with a cat. This is our first pet together, but we have both lived together with a roommate's cat before and have grown up with dogs.
The new cat, Rigatoni, has been very sweet and good so far, but I can't stop worrying about all sorts of things, or potential habits he could develop. "will he knock stuff off shelves, will he shred the couch when we're not looking, blah blah blah" I'm not sure how rational these concerns are or if I'm just overthinking everything because he is new and we are still getting to know him.
My biggest concern is about him eventually scratching at our door for food/attention in a way that damages the door. The shelter told us to keep him in one room for the first few day. While we were in the room with him he was fine, but without company he would claw and meow and did end up scrapping up the area around the door a bit. After letting him roam he has not done this to any other doors, but is it possible he could do this to our bedroom door at night if he gets needy? What are some options to deal with this? My bf and I would prefer the cat not sleep in our bedroom so we can keep our door closed at night.
He also meowed a little at our front door while initially exploring, our old roommate's cat used to try to bolt out the door form time to time only to run back in when he realized how loud and scary it was outside. I'm worried about Rigatoni trying to bolt outside because of this. We are currently installing a gate so he shouldn't have access to the area, but advice for preventing "escapes" would really help me put my mind at ease.
And finally, the least concerning thing for me so far is that when he has been playing with string toys he almost immediately chews them until the string breaks. Are there some toys you guys know of with strings he won't be able to destroy so quickly? He plays a little with other toys but things on a string seem to be his favorite.
Thank you for any/ all advice, I hope I'm not the first person to be so over-anxious about a new pet. Oh and advice for trimming nails would be great, they seem to be really long already and they catch on things pretty often.
