Thinking of adopting a new dog with old cat in house; any possible repercussions?

Hi! I’m new to the sub so sorry if this is in the wrong format

I have been thinking of adopting a new dog as of late, but I currently own an old, antisocial cat.

Some back story on the cat: he adopted us when we guess he was around 9 months. He’d been abandoned and then lived in what we believed to be an abusive home. He came to us with stitches in his tail and would bite and scratch us if we tried to pet him. Over the years, he’s gotten a lot softer and a whole lot gentler( and whole more fatter, weighing in at about 20 pounds) but still avoids all animals and people when they come over. He only likes a select few, quiet people. He even avoids me at times. He is getting older(11 Years?) and I sadly think it is almost his time. I love him more than anything. He means a whole lot to me.

About the dog: I’ve always wanted a dog, and I recently have been having some emotional struggles that I feel a dog could help with just by just being there to play with. I’ve stumbled upon a puppy that is up for adoption. He’s a quiet, well behaved puppy that’s been tested with children, other dogs, and cats and has passed with flying colors. He also has a medium energy level. I fell in love with him at fist sight.

My issue is that I want my cats final years of life to be the best. I want him to feel happy and safe and loved because that’s what he deserves after all his suffering. My question is: do you think it would be okay to introduce a mild, 21 pound dog into the household and still be able to keep my cats happiness? Does anyone have a similar experience with a new dog and an older cat?

Thanks you for any response!!
