I own a 4yo female basenji. For the last 3 years we've been living at my parents. I've often described her as a diva. Sleeps at the foot of the bed, demands 2-3 walks per day, only drank water from a cup, had to be touching you at all times, etc.
My SO and I bought a house a month ago. We spent the last month cleaning and fixing it up. During this time she stayed with my parents. She came to visit 2-3 times for a night at a time with no issues. And no, there is no way in hell my parents did anything untoward to her, if anything they spoil her more than me.
We picked her up a week ago, and things have just been.. different. She pees and poops in the backyard now (yay!) But her affection has plummeted. She has taken the spare bedroom as her own (scratched open the door one day and plopped down, we've been building it up as her room since then with her bed, a bone, her food and water we keep in the dining room). I thought she needed a couple of days but she rarely comes out of there unless we move her bed. When my SO leaves she just cries nonstop and checks all the windows over and over. She refused to eat yesterday and threw up so we made her grilled chicken and peas which she did eat. She doesn't want to snuggle with us, she won't sleep in bed with us, I'm unable to walk at the moment and she lays in the other room all day. I try to coax her out with treats, take her outside when I can, but she just runs back in the other room as soon as she gets the chance.
I know this seems really pathetic, but I just worry. Can dogs get depressed? How long does it normally take a dog to adjust to a new environment? It's been a week. Is there anything I can do besides keep showing her affection to help her acclimate? We still give her lots of love, I spent the day in pain sitting outside so she could lay in the sun, I de-shed her because she was acting so strange I thought maybe she was itchy. Could she be sick? Should we be taking her to a vet? Or is this normal?
