Last night (11 ish pm) my mother and I were in our apartment and we heard a cat meowing loudly without stopping. We both came to the conclusion that she sounded like she was afraid or in pain. We decided to go outside and see if we could help. When we found her, she was still meowing. She was stuck in a fire escape and wanting to get to the floor, and luckily there were two guys there trying to help her get down. Once she got down, she kept meowing and was confused because she couldn't find her home. My mother and I saw that if left outside so late, she was only gonna become more anxious and possibly get hurt since she was running in a busy city with no direction. So we went to a bodega and got her some food then took her with us to our apartment. She hasn't eaten or used the litter box and while she has come to us for affection, she's mostly been very nervous and has been hiding under my bed.
Once my mother gets back home from church, we plan on going back to the apartment building where we found her and trying to see if we can find her owner. The only concern I have now is that my mother says if we don't find her owner soon (possibly by the end of the day), she'll take her to a shelter. This worries me because I think it'll be much harder for her owners to get her back if she's at a shelter and she'll also have a more difficult time calming down as she's very anxious about any loud sounds or sudden movements. My question is mostly, is there anything we did wrong? What would you do now in this situation?
