I am moving soon for a new job and I don't know if I should bring my 13 year old cat with me.
I currently live with my parents and brother, and the plan was always for me to take my cat with me when I leave. I love her more than anything in the world, and leaving her behind would absolutely break my heart, but I'm beginning to wonder if it would be better for her if I do.
In the past, I was her only favorite person, so much so that she would start over grooming and pull fur out of her legs anytime I was away for an extended period of time (the biggest example of this was everytime I left to dorm for the semester).
Over the past couple years things have changed. She has bonded quite closely to my brother. Also my other cat (her littermate) passed in November, and since then she has bonded even closer to my brother. She doesn't seem to like him more than me, but probably just as much, so how can we be sure that she won't experience the same distress when separated from him?
I feel like I'm between a rock and a hard place: On the one hand, she is my cat and she has proven time and time again that being separated from me causes her stress. On the other, moving with me would uproot her whole life and separate her from her other favorite person, so who's to say that won't cause her just as much stress?
I really want to just be like "well, she is my cat and I love her so I'm taking her," but I'm worried that is selfish and will do more harm than good.
(Also, I do plan on getting a hold of my vet and asking their professional opinion, too.)
