A couple weeks ago I adopted an 8 month old cat. He has adjusted to my home well, and all seems to be going smoothly. I live about an hour away from my parents, and go home to visit them about every other week. I generally just go for the day, but occasionally I stay over night if I'm not in the mood to drive back that night. Obviously my cat will be fine on his own if I'm just gone during the day, and once he gets more settled I'm sure he'll be alright overnight - he's very well-behaved and generally just sleep whenever I'm out of the house.
However, if I ever need to go out of town in the future, the plan is that my parents would watch the cat. Likewise, when my parents are out of town I usually watch their two dogs and cat, and now I would just bring my cat with me when I do.
Would it be better to take the cat with me whenever I visit my parents so that my cat gets used to their animals now? He comes from a foster home where he was around cats and dogs and had no problem with them, so I don't think that will be the problem, I just know that generally it causes more stress than good to travel with a cat for a short period, as they don't have time to settle in to a new place.
