I have a 6 month old puppy, Terrier mix, who is not allowed outside without a leash because she likes to go nuts and run like crazy.
The problem is she won’t listen all the time and come when called. She does come but as soon as you reach for her or try to get her into the house she takes off again, like “chase me”.
I know tricks like food and how to coax her into things (also she never gets out on my watch), but today she took off on my dad (I was at uni). Today I got a call from the neighbourhood who had her half an hour later after her escape.
I’m just worried she will take off running and get hit by a car. She doesn’t go very far when this happens she just prances around neighbours yards and the front yard. She always comes back eventually when tired. However she just runs straight onto the road.
We practice recall everyday, outside, inside, at the dog park etc but still when a door is wide open she’s going out it and going to run away as fast as she can without being safe. What I do for practice is I let her run in a mostly fenced yard or open space (frozen lake, field) with her harness and leash on, so I can at least step on the leash when she teases me. She always comes but it’s a question of if she’s going to let you put her leash on or close the door.
Any suggestions on how I can train her to not do that? Any insight on why she does this?
I’m seriously debating on hiring a private trainer at this point because it is so dangerous. My friends all tell me it’s normal because she’s a puppy but I just don’t want her to get hurt!! Help
