Are there any studies how our pets perceive accidental abuse?

Like accidentally stepping on a cat or dog's tail. That obviously hurt them a lot, and they don't speak our language so saying sorry won't help. From their perspective I would almost imagine we did something meant them and then rewarded them with petting, cuddles, or treats for no reason.
