My cat of 10 years has for the last year during the winters, started this thing where after I let him back inside the house (he was born a stray and still likes to go outside) he goes up to his room and immediately starts howling in this horrible way like he's being killed and after about 10-20 seconds he gets quiet. We live in Japan and there is no central heat and air, probably 5 degrees centigrade outside and maybe 10 in the room. We keep a "hot carpet", heated carpet going for him to lay on which he loves and recently bought him a bed which he started using on top of it.
His shrieks/howls are loud enough to wake the dead and my neighbors are being very patient with me. Any thoughts as to why he's doing this and what I can do to get him to quit this?
