My male and female kittens got neutered/spayed earlier today. The male seems absolutely fine, but we're having some issues with our female cat.
The vet has given her a cone and instructed it's left on for 10 days. They told us when we booked it in that she would need a cone, so we didn't think much of it. Since getting her home though, she's been absolutely frantic trying to get it off. There's a gap at the bottom which she's gotten her arm and lower jaw caught in numerous times today, and has needed our help a few times to get them unstuck. She seems very distressed and if we stop stroking her for a few minutes, she's back trying to get it off (it looked like she's nearly managed it once).
We called the vet to ask if this kind of reaction was normal and they said she did sound distressed but they said unless she got "really upset" then to leave it on. I don't know what the line is for really upset, but she seems to be getting worse rather than better.
We called another vet after our vet closed to get any advice on how to calm her down, and they were really shocked she was even given a cone. They said they didn't give them out unless they could see the cat fussing over it or an owner said they thought their cat needed it after taking them home, and when they do get a cone, it's normally only for the first 3 days. They said if it were them, they would be taking it off, but it was obviously our choice. I then thought to ask my friend who has had a few cats whether her female cats reacted like this, and she said none of hers were ever given a cone either.
I'm now torn, because our vet is suggesting we leave it on unless absolutely necessary as they're worried her licking it will get it infected. The vet we saw when we dropped them off said we could take it off if we were at home, but the one we've spoken to after picking them up said it shouldn't be taken off at all, and then the other vet we called up said they probably wouldn't have even given it to her. Our boy cat has been licking at her little cut as well which we've been trying to prevent, but our vet didn't seem that concerned about that as they never mentioned keeping them separate and had them in the same kennel all afternoon.
I don't know what to do here because I've had lots of conflicting advise and just want to do what's best for her, so I wanted to see what other pet owners have done/would do in this situation.
