I adopted a rescue dog back in November and I have strong reason to believe that he was mentally abused and possibly locked in a small area or a cage the entire first 10 months of his life. Each time we’ve put him in the cage, he has managed his way out and since we rigged the cage to a way that he absolutely couldn’t get out (zip ties, rope, locks on cage door) he has physically harmed himself in attempt get himself out. He is roughly 60lbs and an Alaskan husky/German Shepard mix and yes we the cage is more than big enough for him. We’ve tried cage training him and try to get him comfortable with being in the cage putting him inside with certain time limits while we were home and he howls and cries as if he’s dying. And with this being said, we’ve tried letting him free in the upstairs of our home while we were gone and he goes frantic (i.e. destroying three sets of blinds now trying to see outside as if he needs to get out). With all this being said, when we are home he is a very very well behaved companion. He’s potty trained, doesn’t chew on furniture, very friendly with guests and new guests, doesn’t bark, doesn’t beg for food, and honestly a pure joy to have. I’m not a marijuana user, I’ve tried it and I simply just don’t like it. But many people I know, including endless articles on how it helps with stress and anxiety leads me to think that it is a possibly solution for my boy but I’m well aware that just because we as humans use it doesn’t imply that it should at all be used on canines. Any possible remedies, solutions, anything at all would be greatly appreciated. I just want to see my boy live his best life. Thank you.
