I recently bought a kitten who is ~10 months old.
He is very needy and it seems like he is lonely or bored. When I'm home walking around he is GLUED to my feet. If I'm sitting down, he just walks around the apartment meowing. He will play with a string or his ball-in-track for 2 minutes and then walk around meowing again. I play with him for a while and then he just walks around seemingly bored again and I don't really have time to be giving him constant attention all evening.
On weekends he seems to sleep happily on the couch while I do my own thing during the day and then gets chatty in the evening (but not as bad as weekdays when I'm gone to work during the day). I can't tell if hes extremely lonely, or it's just his nocturnal instincts giving him excess energy in the evenings that make him bored.
I've seen endless recommendations about getting a second cat or pet, but that's not really an option for me.
How can I tell if he's bored or lonely? Will he grow out of it? I'd rather put him up for adoption where he can go into a home with other pets instead of being stressed out from boredom or loneliness to make him happy, but obviously I'd rather keep him and keep him happy somehow too.
I suppose there is a bit of a blurred line between loneliness and boredom. Afterall, if your preoccupied, then you're probably less lonely. Any recommendations for self sufficient cat toys? He doesn't seem to like his ball-in-track, and I bought him another electrically powered ball that rolls around but he gets bored after 5 minutes.
