I need some advice on how to manage one fat cat and one skinny cat

So we have a skinny boy. He’s 3yo, athletic, eats a TON. We free feed him because he’s actually a little underweight and we work so we can’t be there to feed him all the time.

We recently adopted an 8yo girl, and she is getting FAT. We recognize we need to stop free feeding, but when we tried the male literally started ripping apart our whole house and eating things. Ripping strips off the furniture, eating them and barfing them back up, ripping shoelaces off shoes and eating them, eating the broom bristles, etc.

So we went back to free feeding for now, because we don’t want our boy to die from eating something he shouldn’t, but our old girl is still getting fat. Can anyone recommend a solution?
