Large Doberman used to punk-out strangers to get more pets.

When I was a child we adopted a guard dog that washed out from the witness protection program. He got too attached to his families and would get depressed switching families every 6 months. He was an unusually large Red Doberman with a very powerful bite strength. We kept up his training and used him as a guard dog to keep our family safe. He was fiercely loyal. At approx 110 lbs he could steal snacks off of the top of the refrigerator without jumping but would heel and obey my four year old sister on a walk, ignoring a squirrel or a cat without taking her for a ride. A kid at daycare had been biting my sister and one day "Wolfy" (not his real name because passwords) had nipped at her and she bit him back. We heard him whining and asked him to come into the living room, and he just whined louder. We came into the family room and saw my sister biting him on the lip. We took him to the vet and he needed 3 stitches. All he had to do was open and close jaws and the pain would have stopped and my sister would have been dead, but he didn't. He just suffered the pain and waited for us to take her off of him. He was such a gentle loving dog, but at the same time a brutal killer if we only asked him to protect us. The trainer would wear two bite sleeves on her arm and sometimes he would still draw blood and he always left bruises. He was an amazing balance of impressive force and undying love and loyalty. He was quite simply the best dog ever. But he was also smart. He realized people were afraid of him. He would never become violent or dangerous unless we requested and invoked a watch or an attack command, but people didn't know that. The garbage man would come into the yard to get the trash can and see this gigantic dog walk up and instinctively say, "good boy" and start petting him. Being a friendly Doberman, he would waggle his butt and wiggle his nub tail and soak up the love. Then the garbage man would walk away and grab the garbage can. "Wolfy" would growl because he knew people responded to that. The garbage man would then pet him some more and try to leave. He kept the garbage man and the postman in the yard multiple times for up to 30 minutes because they were scared to stop petting him. Even when we said, "Just ignore him, he is messing with you, just walk away." they wouldn't believe us and make us come get him. In hind-sight we were pretty white trash and I wouldn't believe me either if some miniature horse sized killer Doberman had me cornered and the advise I was given was to ignore his growling and just walk away. It also makes me wonder what was really going on, because technically speaking dogs don't growl for no reason, but "Wolfy" never hurt anybody because we never told him to and he was well trained and handled like a deadly weapon. Was there something at play that we didn't understand? Probably, but he remained loyal and never hurt a fly.

TLDR: Dog used to intimidate strangers into petting him, and when they stopped he would growl until they petted him some more.
