My parents are thinking of getting rid of my cat

My cat Patches is 4-5 years old, and he is very healthy and very active and cuddly, but we’ve had a big issue with him lately, and my I’ve overheard my parents saying that if it goes on that they will have to get rid of him. It’s going to be their absolute last resort, but I don’t want to lose my cat, he means so much to me.

Patches has been peeing outside of his litter box, but for marking things. His shared litter box is located in the basement, and he does not go upstairs to mark anything, he strictly stays downstairs to mark, except for one time a few months ago when he marked my step dads speakers in the living room upstairs. We believe this is behavioral, because he came from a past owner who owned a lot of cats at the same time as patches before he passed away and we got him. How do we get him to stop marking things? I’ve bought cat toys and catnip plants to keep him active since my parents have discussed it, what else should we do?
