Need help making my cats more friendly now that they've been introduced

My girlfriend and I just got a new cat a couple weeks ago. We did our research and went through the motions of getting her and our resident cat properly introduced before letting both of them roam the house. Our new cat is very loving towards my girlfriend and me, but when it comes to our resident cat, she doesn't like him getting too close. If she's eating or being cuddled, she'll let him sniff her and maybe give her a lick or two, but otherwise she'll hiss and growl anytime he's within a few feet of her.

Meanwhile, he's very curious and struggles with giving her the space she needs. Despite her warnings, he'll follow her closely wherever she goes, try to play with her, sniff her, etc., and this has lead to him getting swatted at several times. We always make sure to separate them when this happens so they can both cool off, as well as when she's getting too grumpy. They've never gotten into a fight, and have only had a few stare-downs where we had to separate them.

All of the material I've found only talks about what to do up to the point that both cats will tolerate being in the same room together. I'm hoping some cat experts here can help give us some tips on how to help them become friends now that they're roommates! Is there more we can be doing? Or is it just a matter of letting them take things at their own pace?

Thanks!
