is the cat breeding industry as bad as the puppy mill industry?

I know that puppy breeding has gotten very out of hand and is very abusive and sad for the pups and not to mention the decreased health because of inbreeding. I've also seen a lot of people talk about how it's difficult to tell ethical breeders apart from the abusive ones, issues like the AKC has been known to verify unethical breeders.

I've been wanting to adopt a cat or maybe a kitten, and my question is, is the cat breeding industry just as bad or as widespread as the puppy breeding industry? I know the best route to go regardless is through an animal shelter, which I'm like to go with anyways. But I consider looking at breeders because I want to get a hypoallergenic breed because my dad is allergic, and it may be hard to find the right breed in a shelter. If such is an issue, what's the best way to find an ethical and trustworthy cat breeder?
