Is sedating a cat for air travel bad?

So I have been preparing my cat for a long flight because I am moving for an internship for the next 5 months. I have been preparing her since the moment I knew about it, since about September. I have been taking her outside to get used to loud noises and most importantly, bought her a new crate that I leave near her feeding area and feed her in. She is very comfortable with this crate and even sleeps in it sometimes on her own accord. This is the crate I will use for the trip.

As I began preparing, I read an article that said they sedated their cat for a flight trip. I’m not a cat expert but that sounded like a good idea, so I brought my cat to the vet and they prescribed her a tranquilizer.

The veterinarian recommended testing out the tranquilizer medicine before the flight so that I could make sure it worked and see the side affects. Yesterday I did so, but honestly I felt terrible. My cat looked so weak and was trying so hard to walk around but couldn’t. She had to poop at one point but didn’t have the strength to make it to the litter box so she pooped in my room. I couldn’t help but feel guilty seeing her so tired and weak. Also, when the side affects began wearing out and she could move more, she seemed grumpy.

I was upset by this so I did more research and I saw some articles about how sedating cats for air travel is bad. I was confused by this because the vet gave me the prescriptions so willingly and didn’t even warn me, plus that one article I originally read had had a good experience with it. Plus I did research on Twitter and a lot of people seem to sedate their animals for air travel, so I really need answers: is it better for them or no?

I will call the vet tomorrow and ask, but I’m asking here because I’m worried they’ll be closed for New Year’s Eve. My flight is New Years.
