To travel with cat or not?

My girlfriend just got a cat and we’re deciding what to do to make sure she’s okay when my girlfriend travels. We work from home currently due to covid. However we are in a distance relationship and rotate visiting each other every weekend. My place one weekend, hers the next.

So here are the parts to our current dilemma.

  1. Have the cat travel with her to my place? This would be an hour drive to my place and back to hers. This also requires crate training which we’ve started from day one. We’re worried about how traumatic this would be for a cat, especially considering she’s new to us.

  2. Leave the cat at home? My girlfriend is new to the area she’s living in and doesn’t know anyone as it’s hard to make friends during covid quarantine restrictions. There’s also not many friends or family around to check in. We’re afraid a weekend is too long for the cat alone. Especially this early since the cat is just getting used to us.

I know we will learn and grow as cat owners and we want to do right by our new kitty and also not drastically change our routine. Any suggestions, tips and ideas are welcome. :)
