My female dog is almost 16 years old, she has mammary tumors and one burst open (again). She already went into surgery 2 and a half years ago about this, the old vet got all the tumors that burst open out, but the vet wasn't that good and my dog didn't receive a good treatment posterior to that and didn't told us anything about other problems that she had nor did x-rays previous to the surgery or sent examples of the tumor to see if they're cancerous, so we changed of vet (I know all of this now because our current vet told us).
Now, my dog just had a thorax x-ray yesterday to see if she has pulmonar cancer (which usually is where mammary cancer does metastasis), but it came out negative, although the x-ray report says: - Bronchial disease. - It is suggested of heart disease with accentuation towards the right side. - Bilateral joint degenerative disease in the shoulder joint. Our vet says she needs to take medications for the rest of her life for this. And about the tumor, she needs a surgery, which brings out 2 options: 1) Remove only the burst tumor, low risk surgery, but will probably happen again with the other tumors and with risk of metastasis (Somewhat cheap) 2) Radical Mastectomy, the solution for the rest of her life about mammary tumors, but with a high mortality rate (30%) (Somewhat expensive) What shall I do? She's old but she's active, runs with me playing outside and goes up and down the stairs of a 4 storeys building 3 times a day, every single day. I'm not sure if it's stupid to put her into the 30% risk of dying and the pain (is a big surgery), with the radical mastectomy, with the hope that she still has a few years to live. Or leave her with the risk of other tumors bursting open and therefore more surgeries, and also metastasis might happen, but doing a far lower risk surgery now... I'm leaning towards the radical mastectomy but I'm still unsure and overwhelmed by this decision I have to take, because I also have to take into account her age, life expectancy and other health problems... And that she's the dog I've had since I was 2 years old. Please help me decide with your take into this, I just want what's best for her no matter the financial side.
TL;DR: My dog needs a surgery and I have 2 options: 1) Low risk surgery, only take the burst tumor, but this will probably happen again with the other tumors she has so more surgeries will come and she stays with risk of metastasis (Somewhat cheap) 2) Radical Mastectomy, the solution for the rest of her life about mammary tumors, but with a high mortality rate (30%) (Somewhat expensive). What shall I do? :(
