So my cat loves to scratch door frames for whatever reason. The door is open, and he has 4 giant stand-up scratching posts to use that he uses frequently. He just does it to be an asshole, usually when he wants to play. Ignoring him makes it worse, and if you play with him he learns that it gets results.
I donated a wooden bookshelf of the same texture to him in hopes that he would use it instead. Now he uses it and the doorframes.
I put sticky tape on the doorframes. He licked it and discovered he loved the taste. So he licked all the stickiness off and then tried to eat the plastic (at which point I took it away).
I personally want to put plastic caps on his claws, but my girlfriend is firmly against it (even though it won't hurt him). She thinks if she just sprays him with the squirt bottle enough times he'll stop. He does hate water, so the squirt bottle is somewhat effective... at getting him to do it behind her back.
That's pretty much all the options I've read online. I haven't tried aluminum foil yet, so that's my next thought... but I worry he might find a way to rip the foil off and discover his favorite flavor of tape is on the other side.
Any ideas?
