If you knew someone who put their elderly dog down because the dog was peeing in the house three times a day, every day, even though they had tried everything they could to treat it, but were limited in what they could do because of the dogs behavioral issues (and because peeing in the house might be an extension of said behavioral issues), would you think they were horrible people who didn't deserve dogs, or would you sympathize?
